c't - "Texts pre-digested"
![]() | Digest Desktop takes a long text and distils it to a short content summary of a just a few sentences. Automatically selected keywords and key phrases help Digest desktop to digest DOC and PDF documents into lists of only a few sentences. It takes texts in English, German and Russian from folders, ZIP and RAR archives. Sometimes keywords include “duds” such as “in addition to“ but the user can apply lists with personal “Stop and key words” to either exclude or include words into the analysis. Unfortunately it is not that easy to exclude phrases such “all rights reserved”. Upon request the tool also summarises several documents at once and exports the result with or without source text, key words and key phrases as an HTML page. Do not, however, expect a summary in the shape of a short text. Digest Desktop rips the sentences as they are out of their context. Logical links and context are lost. Some of the summary sentences might relate to asides while an important aspect could be missed out. And yet the sentences and key words collated by Digest Desktop provide an amazingly accurate overview. It is better than the Word summarising tool. But for the time being it does not replace skilled speed reading which also considers images and titles. If you want to try it out for yourself go to www.getdigest.com and test the web application free of charge for texts of up to 7000 characters. |
